13 Years?! Seriously?

Today is mine and dear hubby's 13th wedding anniversary! Wow! 13 years is a teenager, right? I can hardly believe I have been married to my Jason for 13 years. I promise not to be too sappy today, but I really wanted to write a little about the wonderful blessing of marriage.

Marriage is taken so casually in these days that I fear young couples will not realize the magnitute of making and breaking their vow to God when they say "I do." I am not here to post my opinion on the union of marriage nor paint a flowery picture that is unrealistic. Marriage is tough, some times really tough. But, marriage is also an absolute gift from God and a blessing that words can never describe.

As I look back over the last 13 years, I can see how we have grown and changed together. Together is really the key, and you know the only way to really grow together? It is to grow in the Lord together! The closer we are to Him the closer we are to one another. That may sound cliche but I can certainly atest to the truth of it. There have been times in our marriage where our hearts were not focused on the Lord and you know what? Those were the difficult times of our marriage! I don't mean trials, because we face those over and over, but the really tough marital times were when we were away from the Lord in our hearts.

I can honestly say that I love my husband MORE today than the day that I vowed to be his until death parted us. I respect him MORE today than that day 13 years ago. I cherish him MORE today than I did on our wedding day. Do you want to know why? Really, why? Because today, my husband is closer to the Lord than he was 13 years ago when we began our journey.

So, as I reflect on our wedding day and the butterflies I felt as I stood at the altar 13 years ago, I can say Praise the Lord for giving me Jason as my mate for life. We are truly one flesh and I can not imagine my life without him.

  1. Amen, Dawn! Happy Anniversary! My Jason and I just celebrated our 15th anniversary a couple of months ago, and I completely agree with what you've said here. My brother and his wife recently separated, and that event has caused Jason and I to take a serious look at our marriage to see where we stood. Honestly, we saw some things that we hadn't even realized were there, and so made a conscious effort to invest more time and energy into our relationship. It has changed our lives!

Learning to Let Go

"Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward." C.S. Lewis  It was a rare Thursday with all three of the kids home, the first since my oldest started college in August. It felt normal, nothing out of the ordinary, just my three children at home where they belonged. They sat at the table together, argued with one another and did a whole host of ordinary things. But for me, for this Momma's heart, it was an extraordinary day. A day where life felt "normal" after many not so normal days.  Isn't that life though? A lot of normal days that one day become extraordinary because they are no more. Homeschooling my three was normal for so many years until one day it wasn't. We just took a trip to the Apple Orchard that made me feel so nostalgic. Why did an ordinary trip to the Apple Orchard make me feel nostalgic? Because I missed what used to be. I missed me and my three kiddos taki...

Fear is a Liar

Lately the nudge to write has grown but I have fought it because I'm not sure what to write. There are things rattling around internally I just don't know which ones to write about. This blog is an outlet for me in so many ways yet I let fear grip me and I stay silent. Fear is a real enemy. Fear can keep us from living, really living.  A situation came up recently where someone I care about said something that hurt. I know it wasn't meant to hurt, but it hurt anyway. Fear kept me silent. Fear kept me from telling this person that their words hurt. Fear brought anxiety. Fear threatened to hurt a strong relationship. I would love to say I eventually confronted this person and told them my heart, but fear won and I have yet to speak the words. Fear has kept me from fighting the insurance company so that I can get the decompression surgery I need. I am afraid of another surgery. Ach, there it is, the truth. I'd rather live in pain then go through another decompression. Fear...
