Summer Reading

Ah, sweet summer time! It is one of my favorite times of year. I love the lack of schedule, but just for a little while. Once August comes around I'm ready to get back to our routine. I do, however, use summer as a time for unschooling. I incorporate activities where the kids can learn without knowing their doing so. We love the app Epic (a teacher friend recommended this one), it is a great reading tool. We also take full advantage of the public library and all the fun things they do during summer. But reading is where it's at, I can not  say enough about the importance of getting our kiddos to read. As a parent, if we can instill a love for reading in our children they will be life-long learners.

Here's a little glimpse at what we've been reading this summer.

Our family reads a biography every night before our Bible reading. We have finished a biography on Rachel Saint and are currently reading one about Charles Mulli (he is a modern day George Mueller, this one is a great read).

I have found over the years if you keep putting books in front of children eventually they will find an author they like and the love for reading will follow. It's not  like we use reading as a "punishment" but have at times taken away all other privileges except reading. It was during one of these times my oldest fell in love with reading. Now, thankfully both of my boys enjoy reading. My youngest is not there yet, but I am not giving up!

For me, I use summer time to read all the books I didn't have time to read during the school year.
Here are a few I've been reading on this summer.

Shadow of the Almighty was a great read! It was like a little glimpse into the life of Jim Elliot written by his beloved wife. I didn't rush through it though, taking my time reading it so I could absorb it all. I highly recommend.

This was a fun fictional book I read while we had a few days away. It was an easy to read novel that left me wanting the simple life of the Amish. Not the lazy life we often picture as simple, but true simplicity. Ah, how I long for simplicity.

This book was a favorite of my summer! I read it as a daily devotion along with my Bible reading and got soooo much goodie out of it. Cynthia Heald is one of my favorite authors for Bible Study, and this one did not disappoint.

So, what are you reading this summer?

Faith without Fear

This thought has been on my heart all week, faith without fear. How many times have you stepped out on faith and noticed the trembling inside as you shook with fear? Isn’t it a scary thing to obey the Lord and take that step of faith? Not knowing where God is sending you, how He is going to provide for you, if you are going to get that job offer, if He is going to heal you, if your loved one is going to accept Christ, what to do next… Couldn’t you just tremble with fear NOT knowing??                 Hebrews 11:23 “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.” I was reading Hebrews this week and when I read this verse, a light seemed to come on. I had never thought about faith that way, faith without the fear. As you know, this blog is all about my journey in faith but I wo...

Little Lessons in Faith

Last weekend, Jason and I had the privilege to go and work with a missionary who is beginning a church plant in the states. He has been a missionary for many years and has planted five churches in five countries throughout his ministry. I made a late decision in the week to travel with Jason so I really began the trip by scurrying around to make sure I had all I needed packed. We took Miss Addison with us and if you have a little one you know there are always a million things you can’t forget! As we start our journey very early Saturday morning I ask (for at least the fifth time) where we are to meet the missionary. My husband replies (for at the least the fifth time) “I don’t know honey, he said he would tell us when we get closer.” I smile and try not to stress, as I am planner and when a trip is involved I have it ALL planned weeks before! True to his word, about 30 minutes before our arrival we get a phone call with directions on where to meet. Now, we are heading his way and af...
